What happened
NASA says the aircraft can carry up to 2,000 pounds of experiments and rapidly change flight-control configurations. Its published design targets include Mach 0.75 cruise and 45,000-foot altitude.
Why it matters
The useful capability is swapping experiments without developing a separate aircraft for each one. The announced limits describe a research platform; they do not demonstrate flight performance or an airline-ready system.
What to watch
Watch for the first flight, the initial experiment manifest and measured results from reconfigured controls.
