What happened
Whistle handles up to 30 seconds of audio per pass in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and Polish. It provides transcripts, word timestamps and speech embeddings through the Needle engine. Its model card describes local execution without a GPU.
Why it matters
A small local recognizer could reduce connectivity dependence in wearables and embedded devices. Hardware-specific vendor speed tests should not be generalized to every device, and the seven-language scope excludes many markets.
What to watch
Watch for independent accuracy tests on accents, noise and the actual hardware targeted for deployment.
