What happened

The Claude Platform identifier is claude-sonnet-5-5. Anthropic lists availability across its platforms and Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure. Standard prices remain $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, with cache reads at $0.20 per million. This is commercial hosted access; no downloadable weights are announced.

Anthropic says output generation is over 30% faster than Sonnet 5 and that many tasks cost up to 30% less because they consume fewer tokens. These are vendor results, not a reduction in the listed token tariffs. The company describes Opus 5.5 as stronger for complex, open-ended judgment.

Why it matters

For software and document workflows, the opportunity is faster iteration without automatically moving every task to the most expensive model. Savings still depend on completion quality, effort settings and retries. The announcement also introduces cyber safeguards and fallback behavior; these may affect specialized security work. Benchmark results alone cannot establish performance on an organization’s own tasks.

What to watch

Watch independent task-cost comparisons and migration requirements. The announced future Haiku 5.5 is a separate release, not part of Sonnet’s current availability.
