What happened

Google says its prototype satellite, built with Planet, launched on SpaceX's Transporter-18 mission on October 1. Contact was confirmed and the spacecraft was operating as expected. The team will collect data on how Trillium TPUs and their cooling system handle vibration, radiation and thermal extremes.

The experiment is an early research step. Google describes future concepts involving clusters of satellites and laser links, but this mission is one prototype rather than a scalable space data centre. The company says a separate two-satellite interconnection test is planned for 2027. Results from the current mission have not yet been published.

Why it matters

Testing AI hardware in orbit can replace assumptions with operational evidence about reliability and cooling. It does not yet answer lifecycle cost, launch capacity, debris, communications or whether orbital compute can outperform terrestrial infrastructure.

What to watch

Watch for measured radiation-error rates, thermal performance, workload results and the 2027 inter-satellite link test.
