What happened
KDDI says its group will invest ¥30 billion in physical-AI research and development through fiscal 2030 and build a specialist organisation exceeding 300 people. It aims to deploy more than 1,000 robots at real operating sites by that deadline.
The programme combines robot foundation models with task-data collection, coordination technology, digital twins and links to business systems. Retail, logistics, manufacturing and services are intended settings. A related initiative in Sakai, Osaka, will test robots, autonomous vehicles and drones.
Why it matters
The commercial challenge is turning capable models into reliable task completion inside existing operations. Equipment integration, supervision and exception handling matter alongside demonstrations. The investment, staffing and deployment figures are forward targets, not achieved results.
What to watch
Judge progress through named deployments, measurable operating outcomes and repeatable performance. Watch how research findings move into working systems, rather than treating the size of the announced investment as evidence of commercial success.
