What happened
TechCrunch reported at 15:02 UTC on 3 October that Jack Dorsey said India had ordered Apple to remove Bitchat from its local App Store. Apple’s notice cited Section 69A of India’s Information Technology Act. The app remained available through Apple’s store outside India, while its TestFlight access was also blocked inside the country.
At publication, TechCrunch found Bitchat absent from Google Play in India and its website unreachable through several Indian internet providers. It was not clear whether Google and those providers had received separate orders. Apple, Google and India’s technology ministry had not responded to the publisher’s requests for comment.
Why it matters
Bitchat matters because it exchanges encrypted messages over Bluetooth mesh networks without a cellular connection, central server or ordinary internet access. That design can preserve local communication during a shutdown, while also making conventional interception and blocking harder. The removal is therefore a consequential test of how app stores and governments control decentralized communications. The report does not establish that access is blocked nationwide or that a court has reviewed the order.
What to watch
Watch for publication of the blocking order, responses from Apple, Google and the ministry, any legal challenge, and evidence about continued distribution through source-code repositories or direct installation.
