What happened
TÜV Rheinland’s 5 November announcement says its Boxborough Technology & Innovation Lab has expanded its ISO/IEC 17025:2017 scope under A2LA certificate 3331.06. The listed capabilities include electrical-safety testing for surgical and rehabilitation robots, ventilators, monitors and imaging equipment.
The company also reports a new three-metre electromagnetic-compatibility chamber alongside an existing ten-metre chamber. These are laboratory-capacity additions, not evidence that a particular device has passed testing.
Why it matters
For medical-robotics developers, testing capacity can be as consequential as a new sensor or processor: a design must demonstrate appropriate safety before market access. However, a laboratory’s accredited scope, an individual test result and a regulator’s product authorization are separate things.
What to watch
Confirm that a device’s exact standards and test methods fall within the current accredited scope; the announcement does not establish product approval or clinical effectiveness.
